Take a pair of binoculars with you and some sound ornionthology experience and join our guided tour with professional bird watching guide Paul Connaughton on the magnificent grounds of Longueville House. Paul has been passionate about birds since he got his first pair of binoculars at the age of ten. He grew up in Wexford where he spent a lot of time getting acquainted with places like The Wexford Slobs, Saltee Islands, Hook Head, Lady's Island and Tacumshin lakes. All very important sites for birding and wonderful places to hone birdwatching skills. His passion has since taken him to every county in Ireland in search of birds and to many overseas birding hotspots. He now lives in West Cork where he operates 'Shearwater Wildlife Tours' and is the chairman of the West Cork branch of Birdwatch Ireland. Paul also manages a private estate where they have programmes to encourage Owls and other birds of prey to nest and increase the general avifauna of the estate. He has been involved in the finding of many national rarities including a 'first' and a 'second' along with several other interesting records. Paul loves nothing more than to share his knowledge with others and encourage new bird lovers and nature enthusiasts into the amazing world of wildlife! Birds heard & some seen in past events being: Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin, Wren, Willow Warbler, Blackcap, Chifchaff, Rook, Hooded Crow, Swallow, Chafinch, Magpie, Blue Tit, Coal Tit, Great Tit, Jackdaw, Raven, Dunock, Starling, Jay, Meadow Pipit, Greenfinch, Goldfinch & Bullfinch.
The Evening chorus walk takes place on Saturday 14th at 7pm.
The Dawn chorus walk takes place on Sunday 15th May at 4am on National Dawn Chorus Day.
What Happens: Participants meet at Longueville House Hotel. A brief orientation & maps distributed of various sites on estate. Participants set off on tour with Paul. Later the groups return home to clean up & enjoy a hearty country house breakfast/ light supper (for evening participants). In Longueville we place as much emphasis on the reward at the end of a walk as in the actual walk itself! Afterwards a cosy chat, questions & answers session in the drawing room by the fire. Longueville is known for its more intimate chorus walks, in luxurious surroundings, allowing participants to benefit more from guide’s time & attention.
Helpful Hints: Please ensure mobile phones are switched off before and during walks. This is one of the few occasions when dogs are unwelcome in Longueville! Quiet and patient children are most welcome but bear in mind that walks can last up to 2.5 -3 hours.
